Reducing accidents, preventing injuries
While our unique IDIS and proven DSTC technology help keep your mind on the drive and your car on the road, should the worse happen, the V50's unique frontal structure and intelligent safety systems will keep you safe.
Intelligent Driver Information Systems
IDIS continually monitors the movement of your car's steering wheel to determine if you're negotiating some difficult curves - any situation, in fact, that demands your full attention. If it detects you are, it will delay distracting information - incoming calls on the integrated cars phone, for example - until your drive becomes less demanding.
Automatic Warning Systems
To prevent a serious situation from getting worse, Volvo has developed two self-activating warning systems: The Emergency Brake Lights and the Automatic Hazzard Warning. The aim of both systems is, if something happens to your car, to immediately alert surrounding traffic to slow down and steer clear.
Active Bi-Xenon Lights
When navigating winding roads after sunset, your Volvo S40's active Bi-Xenon headlights mirror the turn of your steering wheel to illuminate the road as it curves, rather than simply shining straight ahead - to show you exactly where you're going.

Cargo Versatility
The V50 is able to seat five adults comfortably and still have room for their gear. And should you need more cargo space, just fold down one section of the 60/40-split rear seat. The wide opening and flat floor of the loading area also make packing easier, and a new interior tunnel and armrest storage area has space enough for ten of your favourite CD's.

All Wheel Drive
The electronically controlled all-wheel drive system employed by the T5 AWD delivers superb road holding on all surfaces. Power is channeled to the front and rear wheels according to the conditions. Since the pair of wheels with the best grip always receives the most power, you can be confident your car is exceptionally sure on slippery roads.
Transmission
The five or six-speed manual gearbox offers fast and precise gear change. Even if you prefer the more relaxed five-speed Geartronic automatic, you can still opt for manual gear change with the flip of the gear lever, allowing you to maintain a lower gear to bring up the revs or provide added braking when approaching a sharp bend.
High Performance Engines
The Volvo V50's engines balance power with efficiency, with low internal friction, electronic engine management, variable valve timing and common-rail direct injection all combining to deliver lively performance and modest fuel consumption. Rest assured, environmental demands are met with room to spare.

Interior Air Quality System
The V50's cabin filter prevents dust, exhaust particles and pollen from entering the car through its ventilation system. Add the optional Interior Air Quality System, and it will also check for certain unhealthy gases as carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide.
Low Emission Levels
Not only has the Volvo V50 an excellent fuel economy, but the cutting edge engine technology and low drag coefficient have greatly reduced the emissions of carbon dioxide and soot particles as well.
Advanced Diesel Technology
Our advanced Coated Diesel Particulate Filter, CDPF, cleans the exhaust gases from over 95% of diesel particulates. Furthermore, the new fuel and engine management system reduces approximately 50% of the Nox emissions.
